04 Aug T-town Elite riders shine at track nationals
The Valley Preferred Cycling Center was on display last week as it hosted the 2016 USA Cycling Junior and Elite Track National Championships. VPCC’s team, T-town Elite, took advantage of the opportunity.
Many T-town Elite riders shine through the high volume of rain during the week-long event as the team was featured in nearly every junior category.
“I was very proud with how our juniors raced,” VPCC Executive Director and T-town Elite coach Marty Nothstein said. “It was a great test for them. Many of them saw what the competition is like at the high level. They all gained great experiences and knowledge to build on in the coming months.”
Emma Workowski, the daughter of another T-town Elite coach, Eric Workowski, enjoyed plenty of success in the women’s 15-16 age group where she earned the national championship in the omnium with 24 points. Workowski finished second in the sprints, first in the scratch race, second in the flying time trial, first in the points race, and second in the time trial on her way to the overall omnium victory.
Also, Sophia Shuhay earned the bronze medal in the women’s 13-14 age group omnium. Shuhay finished fourth in the scratch race, fourth in the points race and won the 500m time trial on her way to the overall omnium win.
In addition, there were plenty of other T-town Elite representatives near the top of the result sheets throughout the week-long event. Reagan Pattishall earned a silver medal for her second place finish in the women’s 9-10 age group omnium with 15 points. Also, Divya Verma, who won a national championship at road nationals a few weeks ago, earned silver in the women’s 11-12 age group overall omnium with 15 points.
On the men’s side, Luke Gerdeman earned a silver medal with 13 points in the men’s 11-12 age group omnium. Nathan Roberts earned a medal with his fourth place finish in the men’s 15-16 age group omnium.
Justin Butsavage earned two bronze medals, one in the sprint and another in the team sprint, in the men’s 17-18 age group.
T-town Elite members train in the Junior Performance Academy, which is one of the numerous community programs the VPCC offers. The program is designed for riders who have successfully completed seasons of Air Products developmental classes as well as the Red Robin Marty Nothstein Bicycle Racing League.
