04 Aug Keirin Cup up for grabs on Friday night
TREXLERTOWN, Pa. – Two names have already been etched into the Keirin Cup from earlier this season. Two more will be carved on the 30 year old trophy this Friday night.
The World Series of Bicycling resumes its usual fanfare with the Keirin Cup on Friday night. Racing begins at 7:30 p.m. with gates opening at 6 p.m.
“The Keirin Cup is always an exciting night,” VPCC Executive Director Marty Nothstein said. “Keirin style of racing is one of the fan favorites as it is very physical.”
The night features a keirin tournament for both the men and women.
Another popular event with the fans, the Longest Lap, is on the docket for the men on Friday night as well. The Longest Lap requires riders to do trackstands for an unknown amount of time before a whistle sounds which commences a one-lap sprint to the finish.
In addition to great racing on the track, it is also a Dog Day of Summer at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center. Fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to the track. Admission for dogs is $1, which is donated to the Sanctuary of Haafsville, an animal shelter.
Fans are also encouraged to bring any pet-related donations with them to T-town. All donations will go to the Sanctuary of Haafsville.
Also, there will be multiple pet-related vendors in the plaza and a few dog-themed games during intermissions.
The first intermission of the evening is the PeeWee Pedalers, presented by Teva Respiratory, Exhibition. Graduates from the second PeeWee Pedalers class will take a lap around the track under the bright World Series of Bicycling lights before taking photos with their fellow classmates.
With just four nights remaining in the 2016 World Series of Bicycling season, the Univest Rider of the Year standings are very close. Matthew Rotherham of Great Britain is leading the men’s competition with 19 points while Racquel Sheath is leading the women’s standings with 16 points. Rotherham is still in T-town racing while Sheath is gone for the season, leaving the door open for Missy Erickson, who has 13 points.
