Lea, Kalz win 2016 Mike Walter Madison

TREXLERTOWN, Pa. – It was German Night at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center, both on and off the track.

Off the track, there were brawts on special at the A-Treat Breakaway Cafe, a Prima Pils German beer on tap in the Beer & Wine Stand, as well as plenty of Oktoberfest fun during intermissions.

On the track, it was Marcel Kalz of Germany who paired up with two-time Olympian Bobby Lea of Topton, Pennsylvania. The two are teammates on the team of Maloja Pushbikers, which are based out of Germany. The duo was the first team to lap the field, which won the riders $500 from Heintz Walter of the Walter Family, and they won the entire event as well.

In addition to the Mike Walter Madison, the night was about the ladies as well as it was the 2016 U.S. Women’s Open. 2016 Olympic Long Team member Missy Erickson was crowned this year’s champion as she won three of the four women’s events on the slate. Kim Zubris stopped the perfect night for Erickson as she won the final women’s event, the 3km motor scratch. Erickson finished second in the event.

Erickson was triumphant in the women’s 25 lap points race, flying mile, and Miss-N-Out.

Zack Kovalcik won the men’s SuperSprint Elimination and Matt Rotherham won the men’s 3km scratch race as well as the Longest Lap.

The team of Lea and Kalz won the men’s 40 lap Madison earlier in the night, which served as a warm up for the main event.

Service Electric’s broadcast of the Mike Walter Madison/U.S. Women’s Open can be seen on Sunday at 4 p.m.

The World Series of Bicycling takes a week off for Independence Day and returns on July 8 with the T-town Showdown. The night of mystery on the track is also USA Night in the plaza, which is celebrating everything red, white, and blue. Hometown Heroes will be honored before the racing. All active and former members of the military as well as any active first responders receive free admission with I.D. Proof.
