Valley Preferred Cycling Center to host 2016 Junior and Elite Nationals

With the 2016 Summer Olympic Games being held in Rio de Janeiro next year, many of the best cyclists in the world will be flocking there during the summer in search of Olympic medals.

The best cyclists in the United States not making the Olympic trek to Rio will be joining the best junior track cyclists in the country in T-town.

The Valley Preferred Cycling Center will serve as the host for the 2016 USA Cycling Elite and Junior Track National Championships. The official announcement was made in a release by USA Cycling on their website on Friday outlining the entire 2016 championship schedule.

The championships will be combined and held on July 25-31 in T-town.

“It is a great honor to host the USA Cycling national championships,” VPCC Executive Director Marty Nothstein said. “We take great pride in hosting high caliber events.”

VPCC, known as the ‘Bicycle Racing Capital of the World,’ is coming off a great 2015 racing season. Additionally, it was its 40th anniversary year, which saw nearly 15 nations invade the concrete crater for its World Series of Bicycling events, which are a Friday night staple in the Lehigh Valley as racers prepared themselves for the Olympic games.

T-town is a familiar home for USA cycling’s national championships as it has hosted multiple over the years. Most recently, the 2013 USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships were conducted at VPCC.

Next year’s event will present a different atmosphere than the one in 2013, however, with both the junior and elite championships being held in conjunction with each other.

“This event gives our junior and elite riders the opportunity to compete alongside each other and battle it out against the country’s best,” Nothstein, who attended last year’s championships, said.

T-town and the Lehigh Valley overall is eager to play host to the best future stars and the current elite track cyclists as the sport of cycling is dominate in the area, specifically for the youngsters. For the first time ever, VPCC filled up all of its Air Products youth development classes this past summer, with a few exceeding maximum capacity to accommodate the eager young cyclists.

Nothstein, who holds claim to 35 USA Cycling Track National Championships himself, is eager for the arrival of the event in less than 10 months.

“We look forward to hosting the nation’s best racers as they compete for the national champion’s jersey,” he said.

The complete VPCC 2016 World Series of Bicycling schedule will be released later this year.
