Open to Riders Ages 9-16
The Bicycle Racing League driven by Schearer’s Sales & Service, commonly referred to as “BRL,” provides riders ages 9-16 to the thrill and excitement of community-level bicycle racing through this one of a kind youth cycling league.
Riders are separated into categories based on their comfort, ability and performance then get to race against others in a round robin format. We encourage previous BRL participants, Air Products Developmental Cycling Programs participants and licensed USA Cycling juniors to all join in the fun!
What’s new for 2023?
The VPCC will introduce a new BRL format for 2023. There will be 3 sessions: Spring, Summer, and Fall. The teams in each session will be scored based on individual races results within the session. Medals will be awarded at the end of each session. The BRL Spring and Summer sessions will have an opportunity for their final races to be showcased at a Friday Under the Lights. The BRL Fall session will have their final races at the VPCC End of Season Picnic. In addition to the individual sessions, there will be a new season-long competition in which team results from each session are combined to determine the overall winner of the BRL 2023 season. The season winners will be awarded trophies.
The VPCC will also introduce new ways to qualify for BRL in 2023. First we will offer 3 series of introductory classes for “New Riders” who have not participated in BRL before. These classes will be offered prior to each BRL session (Spring, Summer, Fall). Another new way to qualify is to participate in our new Try, Ride, & Race the Track program, which will be open to youths as young as 9 years old. Finally, completion of one of our expanded set of Youth Cycling offerings.
The final change for the 2023 BRL program is how we will run our races. Overall, they will be run by a dedicated Race Official. Each of our BRL teams will be managed by a dedicated Head Coach. Our Head Coaches are licensed by USA Cycling, have passed criminal background checks, are SafeSport Certified, and have received CPR and basic First-Aid training. Parents who desire to watch the races have the opportunity to watch the races from a different perspective: as volunteer race officials under the direction of the Head Official.
2023 will be a great year to get yourself involved in the program that has produced National, World, and Olympic Champions!
Our Sponsors keep our costs low
With the generous support of Schearer’s Sales & Service and our other sponsors, we have created a coached program that costs $5/hr or less, yet offers abundant opportunities to ride and race at our velodrome. All BRL programs include a complementary VPCC Rider Membership which creates additional opportunities to ride on the track and opens up eligibility to participate in our athlete training programs as appropriate.
Additional Info:
- – The use of VPCC track bikes is included in the above fees.
- – A complimentary BRL jersey will be issued during your first competitive session (Spring, Summer, Fall) and will be used for the entire season. Replacement jerseys are available for $50.
- – Riders that wish to reuse their 2021 or 2022 BRL jerseys instead of receiving a new jersey are eligible for a $25 refund.
- – Riders will be issued race numbers for the entire season. A $5 fee will be assessed for lost race numbers.
- – Full or partial refunds are not permitted for either BRL All Sessions or BRL & Youth All Sessions passes.
