Endurance Takes Center Stage at the Artie Greenberg Memorial This Friday at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center

TREXLERTOWN, Pa. — One of the Valley Preferred Cycling Center's most historic traditions returns this Friday as the Artie Greenberg Memorial highlights a night of endurance, strategy, and speed at the nation's premier velodrome.

Named in honor of Artie Greenberg, one of T-Town's most influential figures, the annual event features the prestigious 5-Mile and 10-Mile Record Attempt Races, where elite cyclists push themselves to the limit in pursuit of history. Combining endurance with tactical racing, these signature events require riders to carefully manage pace, positioning, and energy over long distances—making them among the most challenging competitions on the Friday Night Under the Lights schedule.

Beyond the racing, the Artie Greenberg Memorial delivers another family-friendly Friday night packed with entertainment. Guests can enjoy bounce houses, food trucks, and activities for children of all ages, making it the perfect summer outing for cycling fans and families alike.

"Artie Greenberg dedicated so much of his life to the sport of cycling and to the Valley Preferred Cycling Center," said Gary Thornton, Executive Director of the Valley Preferred Cycling Center. "This event celebrates his legacy while showcasing one of the most exciting and demanding disciplines in track cycling. It's a special night for our riders, our fans, and our community."

Greenberg was a renowned wheel builder who relocated from New York City to the Lehigh Valley because of the velodrome. He became one of the first Americans to earn certification as a UCI Commissaire, paying his own way to New Zealand in 1977 after the U.S. cycling federation declined to fund the trip. There, he not only passed the examination but earned one of the highest scores ever recorded at the time, becoming the youngest person—and the only individual under the age of 30—to achieve the certification. Following his tragic death in 1980, the men's 10-Mile Record Attempt and later the Women's 5- Mile have proudly carried his name, ensuring his contributions to American cycling continue to be remembered.
