Valley Preferred Cycling Center Names Gary Thornton as Executive Director

As the T-Town velodrome enters its 50th season, Thornton takes the helm to lead the velodrome’s next chapter and develop the next generation of cyclists
TREXLERTOWN, Pa. — The Velodrome Fund, Inc., which operates the Valley Preferred Cycling Center (VPCC), today announced the appointment of Gary Thornton as its new Executive Director. Gary will officially begin his role on January 5, guiding the organization into a milestone year as T-Town prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary as the track cycling capital of the world in 2026.
Gary’s career spans more than three decades and bridges both the operational and public-facing sides of the sport. In senior leadership roles at Detroit Bikes and Beacon Manufacturing, he oversaw large-scale facilities and teams, managing complex day-to-day operations while planning for long-term growth. At the same time, his work alongside event organizers — including serving as a professional announcer at nationally recognized cycling races and marathons — placed him directly in the flow of participant-driven events, giving him a practical understanding of both what it takes to run a complex facility and what riders and fans experience on race day. Together, this experience positions Gary well to strengthen operations, elevate events, and expand the Valley Preferred Cycling Center’s impact both locally and nationally.
“I’m honored to join the Valley Preferred Cycling Center as we prepare to celebrate the track’s 50th anniversary,” said Gary Thornton. “Being entrusted with the opportunity to enable the next generation of riders and racers while promoting cycling as a healthy, lifelong activity — is incredibly exciting. I’m committed to ensuring the Valley Preferred Cycling Center continues to thrive for decades to come.”
The appointment comes at a pivotal time, as the organization looks ahead to a milestone anniversary year and continues building toward long-term sustainability and growth.
“We’re excited to welcome Gary to the Valley Preferred Cycling Center,” said Andrew Rodale Norelli, Chair of the VPCC Board of Directors. "As we approach the track's 50th anniversary, we're focused on continuing my grandfather Bob Rodale's legacy—building a world-class track cycling facility in Lehigh Valley and empowering the community to live healthier lives through the sport of cycling. Gary brings the experience, energy, and perspective to carry that vision forward."
VPCC plans to host a community town hall in spring 2026, giving riders, fans, volunteers, and partners the opportunity to meet Gary, hear more about his vision, and share feedback.
Looking ahead, the Valley Preferred Cycling Center is also preparing to host the 2026 Junior National Championships.
Additional details about the town hall, championship events, and anniversary celebrations will be shared in the coming months.
