Flying Kilometer

Track record: 1:01.4—was set in 2005 by Travis Smith of Calgary, Alberta, Canada

The Flying Kilometer is a solo time trial event in track cycling that measures pure speed and power. Riders build up momentum over a few laps and then begin a 1,000-meter timed effort (three laps of the Valley Preferred Cycling Center) from a flying start—meaning they’re already at speed when the clock begins.

There are no competitors on the track at the same time—just one rider against the clock. The fastest time wins. It’s a test of pacing, aerodynamic efficiency, and top-end speed, and it remains one of the most prestigious time trial events in the sport.
